Invitation to the Solidarity Convention for Anti-Mining & Land Rights Struggles In Niyamgiri - 10 October 2009 in New Delhi

Dear All,

As you are aware, there is strong resistance going on for past several years against mining in Niyamgiri, a home to Dongria and Jharnia Kondhs who draw their identity, livelihood, culture, land from the mountain. The Supreme Court of India gave a go ahead to the Sterlite Industries India Ltd (an arm of Vedanta Resources Plc.) to mine the mountain in August 2008 after a long legal battle and defying all democratic norms of dissent, technical reports submitted by its own body CEC clearly saying no to mining. However, this has not deterred the determination and strong resolve of people on the ground to defend their source of life and identity - the Niyamgiri mountain and a civilization that exists around it.

As the resistance has grown stronger on the ground, it has recieved tremendous solidarity responses from like-minded people and groups across the globe. The sense of solidairty has also grown stronger as well with many more people and groups coming forward to contribute to strengthen the struggle. In this context, a number of efforts have been made to consolidate as well as strategige new methods of solidarity across the country. It is realised that while the struggle on the ground gains momentum, there is a need to also send out strong messages in support of the movement especially in the light of all kinds of power games played around by various vestedinterest groups and the latest measures of the state to repress any form of voices of dissent.

It is in this context, a Solidarity Convention is organised in Delhi on 10 Ocotber 2009 from 4.30pm to 7.30pm in Hindi Bhawan, Near ITO, New Delhi. This is to invite you to participate in this convention and express your solidarity towards the struggle in Niyamgiri. Attached and pasted below please find the invitation letter.
